TimeTravel – Limes
In april 2016, two brand new TimeTravel apps were launched. TimeTravel Katwijk – Limes and TimeTravel Zwammerdam – Limes are now available in the app stores. Together with the TimeTravel Bodegraven – Limes app, these apps tell a special story about Roman history in the Netherlands.
The northern border of the Roman empire in Western Europe was formed by the river Rhine. This border was called the Limes. Along the river many Roman fortresses (castra) were build for defense. After northern tribes revolted and the Romans left the Netherlands, probably most of the Roman buildings and infrastructure were lost because of lack of maintenance and overrunning rivers. Few was ever found in the Netherlands of the Romans and their castra. But with help of old maps and some archeological finds, many settlements are now located. Katwijk, Zwammerdam and Bodegraven are three locations of these Roman castra. With TimeTravel everybody is able to see the Roman fortresses and the surrounding infrastructure like roads, rivers and harbors and civilian settlements next to the military fortresses. The best is, you can try these apps everywhere. Whether you are at home, at work or near the real location of a former fortress, simply download the app and explore the history wherever you are.
